Cooking @ the ELC

Cooking experiences at our Early Learning Centre offer rich, hands-on learning opportunities that support a wide range of developmental areas. As children engage in measuring, mixing, pouring, and following step-by-step instructions, they are building important skills in early numeracy, literacy, and problem solving. Cooking encourages children to listen carefully, follow directions, and work cooperatively—fostering independence, responsibility, and confidence.

Trying new ingredients and recipes also supports healthy eating habits and introduces children to different cultures, tastes, and food experiences. It provides a safe and encouraging environment for children to be adventurous, ask questions, and explore with their senses. These experiences promote open-mindedness and a positive attitude toward trying new things.

Cooking aligns with the Early Years Learning Framework by encouraging active participation, communication, and a strong sense of wellbeing. It supports children’s sense of identity as they contribute to shared tasks, build life skills, and take pride in their creations. Cooking is more than just preparing food—it is a meaningful, engaging way for children to learn, connect, and grow as confident and capable learners.
